Nigerian Youth Independence Day Candlelight Procession

posted on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 07:12 PM

As a way of maximizing the Independence Day (October 1, 2009), The Nigerian youth would be having a Youth Independence Day Candlelight Procession.

This shall be a solemn assembly designed to be a symbolic mourning of the sorry state of our beloved country in areas of Education, epileptic power, Unemployment, Electoral /Constitutional Reforms, Insecurity of lives and properties the list can go on. At this event, we shall draw attention to the fact that we are tired of what has been made of our nation by those who have misruled us so far and that we are ready to initiate the change we want as youth.

The idea is to have the procession in all state capitals of Nigeria. In each state capital, we will organize ourselves into groups of 49 (forty nine youths) that would put on black dresses holding lighted candles and proceed from one strategic location to another where the team leader would then address the crowd on the symbolism of what we are doing.

There's really nothing to cheer on our 49th year independence anniversary and so, the Independence Day calls for sober reflections, hence the Youth Independence Day Candlelight Procession where we would mourn the sorry state of our nation. On that night, we bury our past (indolence and lackadaisical attitude as a youth) and mark the dawn of a new era of an active Nigerian Youth. A Youth who would ask questions, a youth who would reunite and cause a colossal change in the socio economic and political dimensions of the society.
