The power of communication
It is said that 'the pen is mightier than the sword' which is far more profound than most people probably realise. Consider the following:
'I pronounce you man and wife'
'I name this child'
'I proclaim thee, Richard, King of England'
'I sentence you to death'
'We declare war'
'The president signed the treaty'
'Swear under oath'
'Galileo recanted'
'He professed his faith'
Not only do these statements shape the lives of individuals, families, communities and nations but they all specifically reference the act of communication itself - 'I pronounce', 'I name', 'I proclaim', 'I sentence' etc.
In fact communication, especially writing, is probably the single key element that defines civilization, the first of which, Mesopotamia, held the god of writing to be in control of heaven and earth.
It is with this awareness that I approach my work. Having access to a greater voice than most could dream of gives me a sense of responsibility, respect and a strong desire to use it as well as I can.
Here's something of that work.
Sustained Magazine
This is the UK's truly most authentic lifestyle magazine. It is free to readers and uniquely distributed via organic box schemes, farmers' markets, wholefood distributors and other 'green' outlets. Sustained is a not-for-profit organisation.
Our team is comprised of leading writers and broadcasters and everyone is dedicated to sustainability in their own lives. The editorial vision is to inspire and encourage readers to adopt a sustainable lifestyle not because they should, but because, we believe, they will prefer it. Our 'selling line' is: Small change - Big Difference
The readership currently stands at 60,000, 78% of whom are female mostly in their 30s and 40s.
The Creative Coop
Effectively this came into being in order to provide freelance media, marketing, design, writing, IT and PR professionals with opportunities to work together.
Ethical Pulse
I edit Ethical Pulse which is an online news service for members of Ethical Junction (EJ). EJ is a Community Interest Company run by a very small but talented team, dedicated to creating and developing a vibrant community space for ethical organisations to support each other and, through that co-operation, reach much larger audiences than they otherwise could.

The power of communication can most definitely not, and must not be underestimated. Thanks for this post... I found it to be a very interested read. I studied a bit of Journalism communications back at uni, and I must say that it was a real eye opener.
