Taking off my watch on New Year's Eve

I am not a big fan of New Year’s Eve. As a boy in Northern Ireland growing up on a farm many miles from the nearest town, the turn of the year was spent watching Scottish people getting pissed on television whilst I and my sister sat feeling we should be enjoying ourselves but really we were bored to tears.
Surely now living in London it must be better. Well, not really. I used to go to parties or even to clubs but it inevitably meant very expensive champagne, costly clubs and the drudgery of a crammed night bus home.
Actually the best New Year I have had was 35,000 feet above somewhere in the Middle East on my way to Bangkok. Why? With the changing time zones, I never even knew when the actual New Year had arrived.
Don’t get me wrong. I do like to party. But there is something about New Year’s Eve that I dislike. Maybe it is the “what have I achieved this past year” which can throw up mixed feelings. Or “what is in store for the year ahead” may be clouded in uncertainty. But most of all, I don’t like the ‘expectation’ that you surely must be enjoying yourself because it’s the New Year; it is almost like you are forced to enjoy yourself and hence it is almost certain to be a big anti-climax.
So...herein lies the secret of getting through the New Year – act like it has not happened. How?
Step 1 – cook a nice dinner with your friend or lover;
Step 2 – drink lots of vino;
Step 3 – put on a favourite movie around 11pm;
Step 4 - take off your watch and you will miss the whole thing.
Perfect!
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New year my friends and hey Christian, Heidelberg is a lovely place; i once went there whilst inter-railing around Europe. I can't remember it having a bridge though but maybe i was zipping too much wine when i was there. ^^
