What do you think about when on holiday?

When i was a student i went on four inter rail holiday. Inter rail was a month long relatively cheap rail pass which allowed you to travel anywhere in Europe. It was using this pass that i first discovered Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and really got to know France. I loved the freedom of travelling to where ever i wanted to go. Being able to look at a map and say, 'hey wouldn't it be fun to see what that small town is like' or look at the weather forecast and do a U-turn out of central Austria to avoid the coming rain. It could be gruelling too. Overnight journeys in packed trains with barely any room to sit never mind lie down could be hard going but the musty smell of arriving early morning in an Italian railway station and trying to work out the location of the the nearest youth hostel conjured up a wonderful feeling of exploration and excitement. What new people would we meet? Where had they come from and where were they going?
To this day, i love long train journeys. I love arriving in stations on a fresh summer morning or leaving on a warm evening. Two summers ago, i was sitting with my backpack in the restaurant car pulling out of Budapest with its orange evening sky for the overnight journey to Bucharest in Romania and i could not think how i could be happier.
But aside from discovering new places and meeting new people; holidays are a time when I really find time to think. Think about my life, what am I doing and what i could do. Often its about things like how i could organise myself better or what new sport i could take up. But its also a time when i have developed most of my ideas around my working life. It was on the top of Parc Guelle in Barcelona when i decided to leave the world of corporate finance and start my own businesses. It was beside a poolside in a stunning hotel in Phuket that i designed the set for the forthcoming i-genius conference.
It is holiday time when i and many people like me have the time to really think about our lives and make decisions, at least some of which, we go on to put into practice when we return.
As we enter the holiday season in Europe along with many other countries on this longitude we at i-genius decided to conduct a survey of holiday makers on the beaches of the Costa del Sol in Spain about what do they think about when on holiday.
On 5th July we will publish the results at a party in Soho, London.
We hope the revealing answers from this survey will stimulate more people to take time out from their everyday activities and think about what more they could do to make this world a better place.
