Day 7 – “Sorry” is the new word in Australia

posted on Friday, March 07, 2008 03:09 AM

Everyone who visits here should go to the wonderful Museum of Sydney. It’s a small museum by most city standards but it’s packed with accounts of what life was like for the early European settlers and the affect they had on the Aboriginal inhabitants.

Over the years the Aboriginal people have suffered great injustices and even today there is huge inequality and even life expectancy between them and the others who have since come to these shores.

But the ‘European’ Australians, who comprise some my own distant relatives from Ireland, are beginning to come to terms with this shady past. The new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has united the country with his public apology to what was done. I would recommend anyone who comes here to read the touching words that are written by visitors to the museum in the book by the entrance which is simply titled “sorry”. It’s a very important word.

I'm glad you had time to visit the Museum of Sydney also. Did you enjoy the theatre section. I particulary liked the video on the building of the Harbour Bridge.
