Measuring social impact is one of the most fundamental things a social organisation will do. Making a difference is what it is all about and being able to evidence it ensures you stand apart from those that talk good but don’t deliver.
Importantly measuring your social impact ensures you are achieving what you have set out to achieve and are learning from practice.
Taking the time to find out the impact you’ve made pays in more ways than one.

Measuring your social impact starts when the organisation starts - knowing what you really want to do is vital to ensuring data is collected to evidence the impact.
Often neglected during the business planning process, how you measure your social impact is an absolutely critical part of the organisation’s existence. It ensures you are on track.
To measure social impact it is important to distinguish what is ‘social’ about the organisation. Although good for establishing basic outputs, using only quantitative measures limits the uniqueness and enterprising approach of organisations. Take the time to set out the best way to measure what your organisation does - what it is that makes a difference.
My experience is that those organisations that take the time to measure their social impact from the beginning, are clear about what they are trying to achieve at any point in time. They remain focussed and can identify clever innovations, and importantly they are more likely to attract investment.
It may take time initially but it reaps huge benefits in the future. Measuring social impact isn’t to be underestimated.
