First Palliative Care workshop in Palestine By Al-Sadeel Society

Dear All;

On behalf of Al-Sadeel Society I would like to announce to you all the success of the first workshop of the society under the title of: "Initiation of Palliative Care among Health Professionals" in Palestine.

The workshop was held on November 25, 2008 at Bethlehem Municipality for a whole day and it was attended by 45 attendees (oncologists, nurses, social workers, lawyers, university teachers, volunteers, secretaries and families of cancer patients) representing 14 organizations from all over the country that included; the ministry of health, the governmental hospitals, private hospitals, NGO's, universities, press representatives, and public volunteers.

The workshop activities were opened by a word of the chair of the society who welcomed the participants and talked about the vision, mission, strategic plan and goals of the society, as well as the importance of networking and partnership with national organizations that are in the field of health care and education.

The workshop started by talks of the guest speakers; where the representative of the ministry of health, Dr. Imad Shihadeh, appreciated the efforts of the Al-Sadeel Society in initiating palliative care and announced the support of the ministry for the society. Then was the talk of the director of Beit Jala Governmental Hospital, the main hospital for oncology patients in Palestine, who insists the importance of early detection of cancer to decrease the burden on the hospitals and raised the necessity of building partnership between Al-Sadeel and Beit Jala Hospital.

The workshop covered topics related to the establishment of the society, its mission and goal, the basics of palliative care, communication skills with the cancer patients and their families, sharing bad news, pain assessment and management, and loss, grief and bereavement.

At the end, the workshop was summarized by director from the chronic diseases department of the MOH, Mrs. Ayda Zawahreh, who run out the recommendations session that can be concluded as follows:
1. The need for better quality care for the cancer patient.
2. The need for training of health professionals in palliative care.
3. The importance of networking and cooperation between the national NGO's and the MOH.
4. The need for public awareness regarding the early detection for cancer especially breast cancer.
5. The need for national policy and standards for palliative care and opioids legislations.
6. The importance of base line data and research.
7. The need for interdisciplinary team work in the issue of cancer.
8. To involve palliative care education within the curriculums of schools of health.
