Since leaving university I have worked primarily in the third sector.
This past year (2008) I have worked for an environmental NGO, Action for a Global Climate Community, focusing on facilitating high-level dialogue between developed and developing countries, to encourage action towards a 'global climate community'. For the past four years AGCC has focussed on building links between EU and India, aiming now towards a joint Commission to deal with issues of climate change, energy supply and sustainable development. Although grounded in Federalist ideal, day-to-day AGCC works towards practical political solutions, taking into account existing constraints. AGCC recently organised a high-level seminar in Delhi for climate and institution experts from India and the EU. For more information, see www.climatecommunity.org/DelhiSeminar.html.
I have also worked with the European Movement by putting on a film festival of European cinema, From Europe With Love, which put together an all-night programme of classic and contemporary European films, along with animated shorts and free Innocent smoothies (website coming soon). I hope to repeat this event in the near future.
Previous to moving to London I worked for six months with the charity RE:generate on a community development project finding and supporting social entrepreneurs in Wigan, through the organising of a three-week social enterprise training programme. Central to the programme was the focus on community engagement, using the Regenerate 'Listening Matters' process, along with business and leadership training, to promote social enterprise as a tool for community development. See www.regeneratetrust.org
Since 2007 I have also been an elected councilor for the World Federalist Movement (as a representative of UK-based Federal Union), a global citizens movement that looks to strengthen the role of global institutions and engagement of individuals with them. [This is a clumsy explanation at best.] I joined WFM because I passionately believe that, as well as engaging people at a local level, it is essential to remind them of their role as global citizens. So long as we have corporations and other institutions (as well as climate and resource dangers) that supersede national borders, we must ensure adequate global governance to address the inequality that arises from them. My own project is Change is Coming, a website that tries to bring a creative look at collaboration within the growing environmental movement in order to show the power, and resulting responsibility, of individuals with regard to their personal actions, most notably those as taken as consumers and voters.
Our current venture is EnviroWiki, a collaborative site that uses the same software and basic principles as those of wikipedia, but instead of compiling encylopadic information, compile indexed details on local environmental action alongside creative tips, advice and discussion about the science and politics of growing environmental issues.
Because of its wiki-ness, EnviroWiki looks to collaboration for success. Please feel free to add information about your projects straight to EnviroWiki, or, alternatively, drop us an email.
Please come to www.changeiscoming.org.uk to find out more about Change is Coming, or visit www.envirowiki.org.uk to explore EnviroWiki.
