The Role of tourism in development

Government in Tanzania is seeking to increase the number of tourists visiting to over 1 million by 2010 and by all accounts they are going to achieve it.
But what benfit is that to local pople?
It might be argued that the boost in government income allows the bigger picture projects to be started and if this were the case we would all be very happy. BUT precious few of the benefits of tourism trickle down to the poor, which is a shame because tourism could and should be playing a far greater role in the development of the country and poverty allevaition that it is.
LTT are setting up pro-poor income generating schemes that seek to use the company profits to fund local development work. The initial investment comes from cultural tourism, volun-tourism and philanthropic donations.
