Tokyo stocks fall on selling

posted on Wednesday, August 05, 2009 11:50 AM

Tokyo stocks fell Wednesday as investors locked in profits from year-to-date highs in the latest rally, with declines in other key Asian markets adding to selling incentives that led the broader Topix index to snap a 13-session winning streak.

Erasing early gains, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 122.48 points to 10,252.53 from Tuesday’s 10-month closing high. The Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 9.44 points to 949.58 after gaining almost 11 percent through Tuesday in its longest advance since 1988. Securities, nonferrous metal and rubber product issues led the decliners. Major gainers were pulp and paper, air transport and pharmaceutical issues.
