Tokyo Restaurants Raising Money for Children Facing Water Crisis

Around 1,000 restaurants in Tokyo and two other major business areas in Japan will call on customers to make small donations during a weeklong UNICEF-led campaign starting Monday aimed at helping children in developing countries to gain access to safe water.
The Japan Committee for UNICEF said the restaurants will ask customers to voluntarily pay 100 yen each for tap water normally served free of charge, following a similar campaign last year mounted in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
‘‘This is a wonderful project,’’ said actress Rei Dan who is promoting ‘‘Tap Project 2010,’’ which is timed to coincide with the U.N.-designated World Water Day on March 22. ‘‘It is truly unfair that there are people who cannot get what is easily available to us (in Japan).’‘
Leading nutritionist Yukio Hattori also said more people in Japan need to become aware of the seriousness of the global water crisis, warning that 2 billion people could face water shortages in 20 years.
The campaign raised around 13 million yen last year and the money was used to build wells and toilets at schools in Madagascar, according to Japan Committee for UNICEF spokesperson Ayako Urakami.
