iPS cell developer, researcher win Israel\'s Wolf Prize

The Japanese developer of the multipurpose iPS cell and a German researcher of the technology on Sunday won this year’s Wolf Prize for medicine, winners of which are regarded as strong contenders for Nobel prizes.

Israel’s Wolf Foundation gave the prize to Shinya Yamanaka, professor at Kyoto University and Rudolf Jaenisch, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for their research on induced pluripotent stem cells.

‘‘It was encouraging to me to continue my research that I have this kind of appreciation for a technology that is (still) in the stage of development before practical use,’’ Yamanaka told reporters after the ceremony for the $100,000 award at the Israeli Parliament in Jerusalem.

Yamanaka also said he would work on putting iPS cell-related technologies to practical use, such as the discovery of medicine that can cure serious diseases with a relatively small number of patients.

About one-third of the past Wolf prize winners have received Nobel prizes, according to the foundation.
