A Day for Reflection

posted on Tuesday, July 08, 2008 03:45 AM

It was 3 years ago yesterday (7th July 2008), that London witnessed an horrific terrorist attack on the everyday lives of innocent people. 52 lives were taken, and many more permanently damaged. That day is as clear to me as any other, and will forever remain in my mind vividly. Unfortunately, terrorism is a war not fought in deep jungles, on sea or in the sky lines. Nor does terrorism wait... it's spontaneous, and unstoppable... especially in the face of current British and American international security and military regimes. A minute silence is at least I can do in order to preserve the memory of those perished. Life truly is fragile, and too many people are trying to play god.

The G8 Summit in Japan kicked off today. I just wonder how hard and how far Japan will be in pushing the agendas of Climate Change, Aid to Africa, the current situation in Zimbarbwae, CO2 emissions, rises in oil and food prices, and so on. But lets not also forget about fair trade, the ongoing conflicts in the DR Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, and other war ravaged countries. We can only wait and see, but with Japan's timid and non-vocal stature - I have no real confidence that the big daddies of this summit are going to be pushed and challenged. I just hope that not too much whale, tuna and sake is served during this glorious event.

Dear Barry: Yes, we do remember the devastating London terrorist attack with prayers for all affected. We all must continue to do our best to make sure that this world becomes a better and safe home for humankind. Also, I do appreciate your reflective message on the G8 Summit that is happening in Tōyako, Japan from 7 to 9 July, 2008. I just hope that the G8 will, this time, be open to adapt to the changing times in our trying and sad global experience - in terms of making sure that their so called group of most powerful nations is expanded to include what, at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], we call the E-9 countries. The E stands for the Education for All [EFA] Programme run by UNESCO. And these E-9 countries represent half of the world's population; and they include: Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan. If the G8 are really serious about solving the huge problems facing our planet, in some sort of smart, humane way, then their so called Summit must be expanded to include the E-9 countries plus South Africa; and then be re-named: G-18 Summit. Nothing less will be real and meaningful for our aching world.

I agree too, the G8 needs to be expanded to reflect the rapid changes taking place in the world.

I read the links, Barry. And I explored the topic more, especially the food crises around the world and the G8 leaders' eating spree, etc., with more analysis from France 24, NBC Universal's / MSNBC programme "Hardball" hosted by Chris Matthews, Press TV and Reuters, etc. Indeed, I just hope that the Jamboree called G8 will really be expanded in a meaningful way [as i outline ealier] that will solve global problems on the ground with collegial harmony. Enough of the senseless eating and speeches. We need concrete solutions to the people's problems. Now is the time.

Yes, before I forget, Barry. I am grateful for your kind and encouraging words above concerning my blog post on the Prologue of my book: The Great Place. May it empower and shine the light for a better and peaceful new dawn on this our journey called life.

Ok, Barry. As a UNESCO guy, I am also glad that i-genius is part of The Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity at the Culture Sector of UNESCO. Have a refreshing day!
