Community based Tourism and Ecotourism

posted on Thursday, December 06, 2007 01:38 PM

Ice East Africa Ltd is a new company that intends to promote Community Based Tourism and Ecotourism in Kenya. We have summarised our core business below:-

Expatriate service We want to network ourself with other businesses in Nairobi and the rest of the world perhaps we could service for international business employees and executives who are newly arrived in Kenya.

Basically, we could help you get settled in to the area. Steer you to good restaurants (and arrange reservations, if necessary). Arrange homestays, shared accomodation, backpackers rooms, hotel rooms or executive apartment rentals for you and for your family while you are looking for a more permanent home. Help you find a good laundry service. Take you on a tour of the city. Show you where the best markets and stores are located. Teach you about local customs and how to find and negotiate the best deals with local businesses.

We have experience in customer service and the travel/hospitality area this might be a good fit to offer this service.

Community Tourism and or Eco-TourismThe local community in Thika will support rural tourism because of the advantage of having geographical diversity, unique culturally heritage and friendly people which is not yet fully tapped in Kenya. It will be one way of eradicating poverty and empowering the local women in the rural area and quickens economic growth in the villages . Too many of the ways that already exist designed to give tourists that experience are nothing more than fake dancing, fake cooking of fake local foods, usually ending with pressure for the visitors to overpay for cheap souvenirs. We want to change that mentality and
be brave and stick completly to the local traditions.

Throughout Kenya there is growing awareness of the benefits of community based tourism projects. We want to see our communities improve their lifestyles through earning revenue through hosting guests, acting as tour guides, translators and selling chiondos (locally made baskets). Ice East Africa will identify projects that are viable and sustainable in the long term. We want to built affordable clinics and maternity wards, youth centres where youth can be trained to become social entrepreneurs. In the meantime we are looking for partners who have viable projects that can be implemented in the local villages.

Volunteer tourism
Voluntourism there is a trend in people wanting to travel whilst contributing their time and services to the
local people as a way of giving back or reaching deep to their sense of integrity. The local community in Kenya will benefit vastly from volunteer tourism . The volunteers will have fun and a good experience .Areas of volunteer are hospitals, schools, childrens home etc. The programme will promote cross cultural exchange as well as extended tourist length of stay .

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism in Kenya is not yet fully tapped. Ice East Africa will promote tourism for the locals by organising cultural education trips and study tours across the country. We will also incorporate cultural events organising.

Hi Waitherero Might be worth speaking to i-genius member Julian Page, who has set up a sustainable tourism project in Tanzania. Also Alison Lowndes is working on AVIF, a volunteering programme in Kenya. She is also an i-genius member and she and Julian can both be contactd through the i-genius website. Good luck with your project, sounds great! Jo

The promotion and development of domestic tourism sounds like a fantastic initiative. I would like to visit Africa one day - but where to go, and where to stay is a question... as well as having the money and time to do so. Good luck with this!

Thanks barry for your encouragement. I want to organise a cultural even in Nairobi whereby people can participate in our culture for example learning basic local languages, drum beating, traditional dances, kenya food receipes and traditional medicemen, participating in boys circumcision ceremonies etc. Any ideas?

I've never organised such an event before. It would be best to ask an event organiser (I'm sure you can find someone via i-genius). However, I will say that the event contents is really interesting. People would definitely be yearning to participate in such cultural events and ceremonies. All of what I have seen or know of Africa is via the television medium.

You may want to contact African organisations in the UK to check what sort of events they host and how they are hosted.
