'Quality vs. Quantity...'

posted on Saturday, October 18, 2008 06:14 PM

It is unfortunate that I'd have to put the 'vs.' between those two words as I consider the path that politics, economy, commerce and human wellbeing is taking today, since this whole idea of competition has actually been the major downfall - if I permit myself a judgment - of society and human existence as we know it.

For whatever reason, the idea has been sown that there is a need to hoard 'stuff' and 'beat out' the competition, in the [mis]understanding that there is only a little bit of 'things' and that someone will set out to do their best to take the little share away... It's been we versus some obscure, unknown somebody for a while there...

It is why I hesitate to use competitive terms even in passing, because I don't subscribe to the theory of scarcity whatsoever, and find a place for myself and all of us if we so choose to pursue it; not necessarily competing with anyone... except perhaps with ourselves?

To me, an optimised use of our energies, towards self enhancement, sharpening up our skills, doing what we do best, even better and better, is an ideal way to make sure that we are not all caught up in a battle for a scarce item for the public! That self improvement effort - a positive use of energy as opposed to the destructive force of external competition - helps bring us into the realm of Quality, and Quality has a way of simply speaking for itself, and making its own way into its space...

It's funny how the 'average' person will 'fight' to stay in a sub-optimal circumstance by insisting on 'that's the way life is... life is so so hard!', and resisting change, but will not fight to have the best life at their disposal, which comes from and with self challenge and self actualisation...

It would be funny if only it were not so sad, since mediocrity and the scarcity mentality go hand in hand and are the joint effectors of the world as we know it: with poverty of spirit predominant and substantial inequity and imbalance abounding.

I'm suggesting we change our mental competitor... to ourselves and not to our neighbour, that we step up to be our best selves and then we'll start to see what real potential our human existence could possibly be...

It's just a suggestion though...

With best of everything to friends everywhere,

Sherrilene

Written in true spiritual awareness. We should always seek to compete with, and defeat ourselves. Learn to love and appreciate YOU (inwards), before spreading love and appreciation to your neighbours (outwards).

Thanks for commenting Barry. You see the question of will arising though... :)That's where my work comes in.

Dear Sherrilene:

This is very interesting, insightful and thought-provoking.

I especially appreciate the following core paragraph:

"To me, an optimised use of our energies, towards self enhancement, sharpening up our skills, doing what we do best, even better and better, is an ideal way to make sure that we are not all caught up in a battle for a scarce item for the public! That self improvement effort - a positive use of energy as opposed to the destructive force of external competition - helps bring us into the realm of Quality, and Quality has a way of simply speaking for itself, and making its own way into its space..."

Let me then commend you so much for taking the time to share this with us - on i-genius. Have a wonderful and refreshing day. And GOD bless you abundantly!

With very good wishes:
