Obese people are adding to the world food crisis because of the amount they eat, experts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine claim. Food prices are soaring around the world, placing staple products beyond the reach of poorer communities and leading to social unrest.

Increasing oil prices and the use of land for growing biofuels instead of edible crops are said to be two major factors driving up the cost of food. Obese populations consume 18% more calories than average, boosting the global demand for food and pushing up prices, they claim. And, because overweight people allegedly use cars more, that also had knock-on effects on oil supplies and the cost of food production.

On a lighter note, and coming away from experts blaming overweight people for the world food crisis, a school recently handed out bananas to pupils before they sat exams. The Thomas Clarkson Community College, in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, UK, gave the fruit to students sitting Sats to try to improve results - courtesy of the local Tesco's which gave 300 of them to the school.

Bananas are a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C and the B vitamins and are also rich in iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Experts are advising parents to give children a banana or banana sandwich to prevent car sickness.

"What children eat and drink before and during a journey can greatly affect whether or not they'll suffer from car sickness, even when traveling short distances on a daily basis," said nutritionist Anita Bean.
