footprinting the water in products

We all love to it eat and drink, and eat and drink to love... but are we being green enough at the same time?! This time, we are not talking about fair trade, meat, co2 offsetting, transportation and packaging. No, no no... we are talking about the amount of hidden water it takes to make the foods and drinks we buy. Have you ever thought about it?

With water scarcity a rapidly growing problem world-wide, lobby groups such as the Food Ethics Council (FEC) and Sustain are calling for all products to have a "water footprint" giving consumers the knowledge of the amount of water that has been used during the manufacturing process. For example, one cup of fresh coffee needs 140 litres of water to produce while the production of one kilogram of beef requires 16,000 litres of water. It's definitely a lot more water usage than what we initially thought!
