SHINE 2010 unconference for social entrepreneurs

The cool and vibrant underground Shows Studio was the setting for the Shine 2010 unconference for social entrepreneurs which took place last week Thursday and Friday, and then at The Hub, Kings Cross on Saturday. Every brick and boarded corner was filled with inspiring talk of projects past, present and to come in the future. Every handshake formed new friendships and partnerships, and every session was listened upon with great interest. How to build your business, how to get funding, how to pitch your ideas, how to make change - advice on everything and anything to do with social entrepreneurship was on offer.

Andy Chapman, i-genius Academy coach and the founder of Braided River found the events very inspiring. “The youth here are teaching adults about social innovation in a very exciting way'.

However, every good conference needs a bit of grit and that was certainly provided for at the international session hosted by i-genius where the discussion was dominated by the merits and downside over aid to African countries. Some of the participants had worked on projects in Uganda, Ethiopia and other countries which were heavily reliant on charitable or governmental aid. But others felt that this aid was causing practical difficulties for local enterprise and a dependency culture in many African countries.
