Thomas Beatie, 34 – who was in fact born a woman and called Tracy – had a sex change 10 years ago which removed his breasts, allowed him to grow a beard and legally change his gender. But he kept his female sex organs because he always wanted a child, arguing it was his “right to have a biological child”.

“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. “I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Mr Beatie told Oprah Winfrey earlier on in his pregnancy. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”

He was artificially inseminated by his wife using a baster. It is the couple’s second attempt to have children. He became pregnant with triplets two years ago but lost them. The American, who once was a Miss Teen Hawaii finalist and now lives in Oregon, is due to give birth in six weeks.
